Approximately 125,000 spring chinook smolts are released from acclimation ponds in the West Fork of the Hood River. Since 1991 these smolts have been from Deschutes River broodstock. Deschutes River chinook are thought to be similar to the historical Hood River native chinook population.

A supplementation program aims to supplement the naturally spawning population and boost natural production without adversely impacting the wild population. Ideally, broodstock used for supplementation programs are taken from a representative sample of the wild population so as to mimic the wild population's genetic and phenotypic structure. In certain situations, such as when a wild run has gone extinct, this is not possible and the selection of a suitable donor stock is crucial to the long-term success of the program. The "2022 Oregon Big Game Regulations" describing hunt areas and seasons was distributed in December 2021. Season dates adopted at that time included date errors for three hunts shown in the hunt tables presented to the Commission. These rule amendments are needed to correct the seasons for hunt 131R2 and hunt 640T to reflect the accurate dates published on tags for these hunts.
How to apply for a controlled hunt
Customers may print only one big game, turkey, fee pheasant, angling tag or hatchery harvest card. If you lose your tag and need a reprint, you need to go to a license sales agent or ODFW office and pay $2 for a reprint. Each reprinted tag is unique and only the most recent reprint from the system is valid. OSP and ODFW staff have the ability to scan the barcode on a printed tag to confirm it's valid. The Hood River also supports a native population of bull trout as well as small populations of coho and fall chinook salmon. This modification of the hunt area boundary for 252T2 will account for the unexpected reduction in hunter access by expanding the hunt area. Existing stocks of anadromous fish in the Hood River are thought to be much lower than historical averages. Spring chinook salmon populations are considered to have gone extinct in the late sixties and early seventies. In 1998 the National Marine Fisheries Service listed Lower Columbia River steelhead as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The Hood River supports the easternmost stock of LCR steelhead in Oregon.
